Practical Issues in Confirming Legality of Wood Origin and Recommendations of Improving Procedures (on the example of supply chains from Russia to China)

Practical Issues in Confirming Legality of Wood Origin and Recommendations of Improving Procedures (on the example of supply chains from Russia to China). WWF-Russia – Moscow, 2008. – 44 p.

The publication contains results of WWF-Russia and China joint pilot work concerning investigating supply chains of timber from a cutting area (i.e. certain Russian procurement officers and suppliers) to consumers in China. China is one of the main buyers of Russian timber, and a lot of problems in providing fair trade and legality of timber origin arise in the process of Russia-China cooperation. The book gives recommendations how to improve procedures of confirming legality of wood origin in Russia-China context which can lower risks of involving illegal timber in supply chains. Learning practice of two Chinese companies producing furniture and buying timber harvested in Russia for this purpose is the basis of the information used in the publication. Apart from detailed analysis of supply chains of the two companies the publication analyses and estimates systems of checking legality of wood origin applied in this case.

We suggest using this publication together with “Act Legally!” (2008) edited by WWF-Russia management (www.wwf.ru, section “Publications”) and we hope that it will be useful for a wide circle of the parties concerned: from enterprises harvesting and processing timber and trading in it to importers and producers of finished forest products.
