March 21 is the International Day of Forests, the FLEG II Program is joining in the celebrations with the publication of a new gallery of photographs from the seven countries that are the beneficiaries.
Outcomes of FLEG II activities in Russia
At a meeting in Moscow, members of the National Programme Advisory Committee reviewed the activities implemented in Russia over the past 6 months.
Progress Towards New Sanctuary in Tavush Region of Northern Armenia
In the frames of the FLEG I Program, optimization of forest sanctuaries of Northern Armenia was initiated and feasibility study was conducted for establishment of a forested protected area. The study was aimed at assessing the possibility to have one well-managed sanctuary instead of 3 existing ones. The study revealed rather rich biodiversity in the target area including flora and fauna with a number of species registered in the Red Book of Armenia and IUCN Red List.
FLEG Promotes Forest Safety in Azerbaijan
Forest-based recreation activities are rapidly increasing in Azerbaijan. However, visiting the forest is not always safe and fun. Sometimes, people face unexpected emergencies, which they are unable to handle. Visitors do not always know basic safety rules and can cause an irreparable damage to the sensitive forest eco-system. The Forest Safety Manual addresses these problems.
FLEG contributed to development of sustainable forest management in Belarus
The FLEG II Program provided analytical support to the development of Belarus' Strategic Forestry Development Plan for 2015-2030.
FLEG helps develop proposals to amend Russian forest legislation
At a meeting in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, FLEG II Program expert Alexey Bobrinsky took part in the meeting of the Coordinating Council for the Protection of Forests of the Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia's second largest region. The Council consists of representatives of various government agencies of different levels, including the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Krasnoyarsk Krai, as well as NGOs.
FLEG II Promotes Forestry Protection at Caspian Technologies for Environment Exhibition
The FLEG II exhibition stand featured the development of the young foresters movement; climate change adaptation and mitigation; Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification and the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity scoping study (TEEB).
Moldovan Forest Agency tests its first timber traceability system
Within the FLEG II Program in Moldova, on 10th of February 2015, a work meeting was held at Moldsilva Forestry Agency. The meeting aimed to present a wood traceability draft software application. The application is meant for wood traceability, a monitoring system from the standing timber till the end user.
New Partnerships to improve the Forestry Education in Moldova
On Tuesday, February 10, 2015, the Ecology College in Chișinău, Moldova and WWF-Danube Carpathian Programme (WWF-DCP) signed two important partnership documents, which support the development of forestry education in Moldova Republic. One partnership foresees the collaboration of the College with WWF- DCP, the other document represents the first international collaboration of the Moldovan school with the “Bucovina” Forestry Highschool from Câmpulung Moldovenesc, Romania.
