Russia sums up results of St. Petersburg declaration

Participants of the round table “On the implementation of the FLEG practices in the Russian Federation” discussed the fulfillment of the commitments taken by Russia within the Europe and North Asia Ministerial Conference on Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (ENA FLEG). Home at Last: Tusheti Protected Landscape Officially Under Local Control

AKHMETA, Georgia—In September of 2014, the Georgian Government officially transferred forest management control of the Tusheti Protected Landscape to the Tushetian people by authorizing the local Tusheti Protected Landscape Administration (TPLA) to manage the forests in the Protected Area.

On September 26, 2014 in the framework of FLEG II Program a meeting was held at the WWF-Caucasus Programme Office in Tbilisi about the importance of FSC-based voluntary forest certification and relevant perspectives in Georgia.

Assessing Forest Dependency in Eastern Europe

Over the last four months, consultants have braved watchdogs and other daunting challenges to complete surveys of over 1250 households in forest communities in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, and Ukraine. The goal of the study is not only to quantify how people rely on forests, but also to help determine whether that reliance is sustainable into the future and why.

Preparing the final mile in historic handover of Georgian forest protection to local control

Local residents are closer than ever to assuming control over the Tusheti Protected Landscape, a sublime landscape located in Akhmeta, Kakheti, in north-eastern Georgia. Together with Tusheti Strict Nature Reserve and Tusheti National Park, the Tusheti Protected Landscape is part of the 31’518 hectare Tusheti Protected Area, one of Europe’s largest protected areas.

Are Azerbaijan’s Ancient Forest Communities Ready for Climate Change?

Development of forest adaption plans to climate change at local and regional levels as well as support to local communities for forest disaster management is one of the FLEG II Program’s leading activities in Azerbaijan. IUCN launched this assessment activity as part of its FLEG II program work in March of 2014 and is on schedule to analyse the data in late summer.

Stakeholders Meeting on TEEB Scoping Study and FSC in Baku

On the 4th of August 2014, in the frames of the FLEG II (ENPI East) Programme a stakeholders meeting was organized by WWF-Azerbaijan in Baku. The aim of the meeting was to present to the participants a draft of the study analysis carried out by the consultants, in order to obtain their feedback through open discussion and to incorporate their relevant comments and suggestions into the final report.
