43 pupils and students from more than 10 countries came together to discuss forest problems in the cities of Moscow and Suzdal, Russia.
They were all selected and invited by the organizers of the XII International Junior Forest Contest, which took place from September 27 until October 3. The Azerbaijani delegation was represented by the school students from Ivanovka village Anna Orlova and Timofey Prokofyev, winners of the IV Republican-wide Young Foresters’ Contest in Azerbaijan, who came to the youth assembly with FLEG II support. They returned home with the honorable diplomas, special medals and prizes.
A week-long event held in the ancient Russian city of Suzdal was full of intense discussions and extended presentations covering the whole spectrum of problems experienced by the forestry sector in different countries.
“Let’s protect the forests from fires”, the project featured by Anna and Timofey, made it to the final stage. “We can prevent forest fires if we know the exact mode of conduct in the forest”, said Anna Orlova during the discussions followed the presentation.
“Our young foresters addressed two key groups of forest users – tourists and local population. We talk to them, hand out flyers and other promo materials to persuade people to care about the environment and about the forests”, adds Timofey Prokofyev.
Part of the presentation where the children showed how they work together with the forestry authorities on the ground was particularly interesting. A crucial study of the forest environment and research on the ecological status of the forest were brilliant examples of successful cooperation with the employees of the district ecological education and practice department and district state Forest Rehabilitation and Guarding Enterprise (FRGE) in Azerbaijan.
The International Junior Forest Contest is the annual event conducted by the Federal Forestry Agency of the Russian Federation. The participation of the Azerbaijani delegation was funded by the FLEG II Program with the organizational support from the Republican Center of Ecological Education and Practice under the Ministry of Education of Azerbaijan.
