On November 27, 2013, The Voronezh government website announced that a meeting was held between the Vice-Governor of the Voronezh region, the Head of the Department of Property and Land Relations Maxim Uvaidov, and other high ranking forestry officials in the region and representatives and experts from the EU funded FLEG II Program.
The Voronezh region was included in the Program as a pilot area to specifically address forest management and law enforcement issues in areas designated as protection forests (under the protection of the law). Such forest areas have their own governance particularities associated with their use, conservation, fire protection and health.
In 2010, the forest area was significantly affected by forest fires. Rehabilitation and reforestation of these areas is still presents a challenge, as a result of burnt wood remaining in the fire affected areas
