Stakeholders find solutions for a more efficient forestry sector in Armenia

The final consultation was held in Yerevan, with participants from the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Nature Protection, Hayantar (Armenian Forest), State Forest Monitoring Center, State Inspection, the academia, and NGOs.

A new report by FLEG II outlines recommendations for improving Armenia’s legislation and institutional structure related to forest management.

The report highlighted the existing gaps and discrepancies in the legislative base and the need for administrative and institutional amendments to ensure sustainable forest management in the country.

The EU-funded FLEG II Program analyzed the current legislation and administrative structures governing the forestry sector of Armenia. Simultaneously, under the ADA-funded FLEG II (Complementary measures for Georgia and Armenia), the recommendations of the report were discussed by stakeholders.

The final consultation was held in Yerevan, with participants from the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Nature Protection, Hayantar (Armenian Forest), State Forest Monitoring Center, State Inspection, the academia, and NGOs.

Martun Matevosyan, head of Hayantar and FLEG Focal Point for Armenia, emphasized the urging need for amendments and restructuring in the sector: “Currently the Government of Armenia is looking into ways to introduce changes to the forestry sector in order to make the whole mechanism more sustainable and efficient. The conducted analysis will facilitate this process, since the recommendations provided in the report reflect the needs and suggest the solutions for the forestry sector of Armenia. We sincerely hope that the Government of Armenia will build its further strategy and actions based on the recommendations of the report.”
